What Exactly Is a “Mastermind Group” & Where Did the Idea Originate?

The benefits of the right mastermind group (“meeting of the minds”) are all-encompassing. Facilitated correctly, it is a peer-to-peer mentoring experience with a purpose to help each member solve problems, brainstorm ideas, give & receive support, commiserate losses, celebrate wins, expand mindsets, and hold one another accountable. It’s a safe place where you can speak the truth and expect it in return. It’s a place to make connections, share contacts and collaborate in elevating each other’s lives. The end result is you are propelled forward in the most powerful way possible in reaching the highest levels of success.

Conceptually, the idea of peer-to-peer groups resulting in more success than individual efforts dates back to Proverbs 15:22, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed.”

The first documented peer group is believed to have been formed by Benjamin Franklin in 1727. Called The Junto Club, it consisted of 12 members (a chemist, physician, botanist, mathematician, engineer, geographer, cabinet maker, bartender, clerk, printer, surveyor). Even though these individuals came from different backgrounds with different skillsets, this group was curated with a purpose of “mutual improvement” for all members. In fact, each time they got together, Ben Franklin would start off by asking the group two questions: 1. “Who is thriving & why?” 2. “How might they be emulated?” Not surprisingly, Franklin’s associations from this group led to contracts and inside business deals that allowed him to grow his great wealth into becoming the first “self-made” millionaire in the United States. It’s no wonder that The Junto Club met regularly for an incredible 38 YEARS!

In 1914 Henry Ford started The Vagabonds. It included Thomas Edison, Warren G. Harding and Harvey Firestone. This group of 20th Century powerhouses created a mobile mastermind group, famous for taking their cars on long road trips together. They would spend weeks out on the road – without any of the distractions from their businesses – where they could discuss whatever they wanted or needed. These men shared their successes, their failures, and undoubtedly sought advice from each other. Being in a group of like-minded peers, they helped one another reach their goals and aspirations with the collective wisdom of the group.

Billionaire steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie credited his entire fortune to his mastermind group – and he inspired author Napoleon Hill to write about it in his 1937 landmark book, Think & Grow Rich. Hill was the first to coin the phrase “master mind alliance” and described the Mastermind principle as “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony. No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind, also known as, the Mastermind… it is the principle through which you can accomplish in one year more than you could accomplish without it in a lifetime.” He explains how our brainpower can be leveraged when working with other people, like a group of batteries rather than a single battery. The benefits, according to Hill, is both economical and psychological.

And don’t forget prolific and imaginative writer C.S. Lewis, who wrote more than 30 popular books like The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity. His fictional series, The Chronicles of Narnia, has sold more than 100 million copies and has even been adapted for film. While his wild success and influence is evident, like most successful people, he didn’t get there on his own.

Lewis was a part of a writer’s group named The Inklings. J.R.R. Tolkien was also a part of the group along with 17 other writers. They’d gather regularly to share manuscripts, poems, or a new chapter of a book in progress and receive critique, encouragement, advice and more. It was in these regular gatherings that Tolkien gradually shared each chapter of The Lord of the Rings and Lewis received feedback on works like Miracles.

How Is Prosper360 Different from Other Groups, Communities or Networks?

Some organizations cast as big of a net as possible, attempting to be “everything to everybody”, allowing virtually anyone to join – with as many as tens of thousands of members, and hundreds of chapters, etc. With the bar being set so low, there’s very little vetting process, and therefore no real “curation” of like-minded peers. Rather than a specific niche of kindred-spirit entrepreneurs – the kind you’d love to go to dinner with – you’re just a “number” surrounded by people you’d never choose to be around. Remember… the success, longevity & quality of a mastermind is largely determined by who’s NOT allowed in the room.

Other groups are either industry-specific (producing a limited “group-think” mentality) or are primarily focused on only one area of business, such as marketing. These groups are acceptable if you’re content looking through a very narrow lens with very little out-of-the-box insights & fresh perspectives. The benefits of tapping into the collective genius, wisdom & experience from a cross-pollination of entrepreneurs in different industries is completely missing.

Prosper360 is for entrepreneurs & business leaders who are looking to confidently scale their business while thriving in ALL areas of life.
